About

Taking the AP Music Theory class last year made me realize the importance of ear-training, as it helped me better understand the pieces I played on the violin. When the pandemic hit, our class had to resort to online ear-training platforms, which were extremely useful, but did not have everything we were looking for, such as harmonic and melodic dictation exercises. That is why I wanted to develop this "perfect ear-training website" and make it available to other remote learners when they needed it most.

I am a junior at Phillips Academy Andover from Seoul, South Korea. If you have any comments our suggestions, please feel free to email me at ccho22@andover.edu.

What you'll learn

  • How to recognize and distinguish different intervals, scales, and chords.
  • How to transcribe music.
Anyone at any time can access these guided programs to practice and improve ear-training proficiency to enhance musical abilities and applications. Each program is designed to accurately train your ears to quickly understand the sounds you hear and connect you to the next level of your musical development.

Phillips Academy Andover provides students with opportunities to engage in independent work in place of a course. Students are encouraged to apply with a mentor in the same field of study. This particular Independent Project involved building an ear training website designed to facilitate remote learning. To design and structure practical ear-training exercises, surveys and interviews were conducted to address the most challenging musical elements to hear and distinguish.

This website was created by Cathy Cho '22 as part of an Independent Project at Phillips Academy Andover (Spring, 2021) with her advisor, Dr. Derek Jacoby.
